How much are car tags in Ohio?

I’m moving soon and I need to register my vehicle when I arrive. How much does Ohio charge for new car tags?

Answer
Purchasing car tags in Ohio will cost you $31 plus tax and service fees. If you have personalized plates, it will likely be more (around $60).
If you drive anything other than a passenger vehicle for personal use, your fees may differ:
  • Moped registrations are $21
  • Motorcycle registrations cost around $25
  • Light non-commercial vehicles (up to three-fourths of a ton) cost $46 and heavy non-commercial vehicles (up to a ton capacity) are $81
Tags must be renewed annually. If your registration has expired for 30 days or more, there is an additional $10 fee.
The state of Ohio will also charge a Deputy Registrar License Agency fee of $5 for a one-year renewal, a processing fee of $1.75 for online transactions, and the current postage rate to pay for mailing your tags.
Since you’re moving states, be sure to update your address with your insurance company and find out if your current policy meets Ohio’s minimum insurance requirements.
