How much AC coolant does a car hold?

I've never had to deal with AC coolant before, but my mechanic asked if I'd been adding coolant. I need to buy some, so how much coolant does a car hold?

Your car uses coolant not just for the AC but to keep your car from
overheating
. Generally, a car’s A/C can hold between 14 to 28 ounces of coolant.
Your AC can use two types of coolant:
  • R-134A
  • HFO-1234y (Not available everywhere, but considered to be safer for our planet.)
Because coolants are chemicals, please wear gloves when handling these substances and make sure to follow the instructions on the bottle.
Topping off the liquids in your car is an important part of a
regular car maintenance routine
. Reviewing your car insurance policy is also an important part of car ownership.
