How many square feet is a 2-car garage?

My wife and I are looking at homes, and we found a great one with a two-car garage. We were hoping for some storage space along with our two cars, but we aren’t sure it’s big enough. What’s the standard square footage for a 2-car garage?

Answer
Congratulations on the new house! Standard **two-car garages are about 18 feet wide and 20 feet deep or 360 square feet. While that is enough for two cars, extra storage might be hard to come by.
However, you can use these tips to optimize your storage space:
  • Hanging shelves attach to your ceiling and give you an easy place to store boxes and other such items.
  • Wall hangers are useful for smaller items like clothes, bags, or tools. They tuck right up against the wall, saving tons of space.
  • Elevated storage racks mount against the wall above eye level. Once installed, these storage solutions can fit boxes out of harm’s way without sacrificing floor space.
Now that you have a house and a car, you may also qualify for bundling, which could help you lower your monthly insurance rate. Ask your provider if they think bundling is right for you, and make sure you’re already getting a multi-car discount on your vehicles.
