The Texas
written driving test has 30 multiple-choice questions. All new drivers must pass the Texas written exam before obtaining a learner’s permit. The test covers road signs and driving laws and can be written as early as 15 years old. However, if you’re under 25, Texas law requires you to complete a driver education course at a certified Texas driving school before taking the test. In this course, you’ll cover topics like:
Inclement weather driving
Once you’ve completed the required education courses, you can apply for your Texas learner’s permit
. Visit a Texas Driver’s License office and bring the following documents: Texas Driver Education Certification
Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE form) issued by a school or high school diploma equivalent (GED)
While most states require an 80% on your test, Texas only requires a score of 70% to earn your permit, meaning you must get at least 21 correct answers to pass.
The written exam structure is as follows:
Highway Signs Examination (15 questions)
Traffic Laws Examination (15 questions)
You are allotted 30 minutes to complete each section and are allowed up to three attempts.
Keep in mind: The written test is comprehensive, and its difficulty depends on how well you prepare. Most driver training programs prepare you to pass your written exam by covering most of the information that appears on the exam.
