How many points before your license is suspended in Iowa?

My girlfriend and I are taking a road trip soon and we have to cross most of Iowa to get to where we’re going. My girlfriend wants me to drive the whole time we’re there because she’s worried that another ticket could cause her license to be suspended. Can this really happen?

Yes! If you have six or more points on your record, you can have your license suspended in
Iowa
. The state assigns point values between two and six to different types of driving infractions, so even if your girlfriend just has a couple of minor charges on file, it’s possible that another one will lead to suspension.
However, this doesn’t only apply within the state. Even if you’re charged with a traffic infraction in another state, the charge will transfer to the state of Iowa and your license can still be suspended. As such, the best course of action is for her to drive carefully until the points on her record expire.
Iowa does not disclose how long it takes for points to expire or be removed from your driving record. If you’re interested in learning more about your driving record, you can contact your local DMV to request a copy.
