How many miles should brakes last?

I’ve started noticing unusual noises when I’m driving and braking, which is the first time this has happened in my car since I got it three years ago. I’m not sure if it’s an issue with the brakes or something else—how many miles should brakes last on my car?

Most car brakes should last between 25,000 to 60,000 miles, or between three and six years—a fairly wide range in time, to be sure. So if you notice grinding, squealing, vibrating, or a greater need to push down on your pedal to brake, it’s probably time for a replacement.
