How many miles should a good used car have?

I’m in the market for my first car, and I plan on buying a used one. When I shop online, I can see the mileage listed for each used car, but I don’t really know what’s considered low or high mileage. What should I be looking for?

The ideal mileage on a used car will depend on a number of factors; however, the average used car tends to have about 12,000 miles per year of ownership. If you’re looking at cars that are three years old, for example, you’d want to be wary of models that have more than 36,000 miles on them.
You should also do your research on different car makes. Some cars are built to last longer than others, and this will affect the age and mileage of the cars that you’re considering.
Here are some other factors to keep in mind when you’re shopping for used cars:
  • Reliability
  • Location of the used car (cars that have dealt with severe weather may have more wear and tear, for example)
  • Maintenance history
