How many Mazda Miatas were made?

I recently moved to the coast, and it seems like everywhere that I turn, I see a Mazda Miata. I never saw many living in a colder climate, but I’m starting to think it’s a far more popular vehicle than I ever imagined. How many Miatas did Mazda make?

Mazda has made around 1.05 million Miatas worldwide since the car’s debut in 1989, making it the most successful two-seater sports car ever produced. This equates to about 37,000 units sold each year, although the popularity of the car has waned in recent years due to Americans ditching
convertibles
and other sports cars in favor of SUVs.
While the 1989 edition of the Miata certainly garners attention from collectors, most Miata enthusiasts would argue that the 2004 edition is the best ever made. Featuring a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 178 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque, the Miata had a 0-60 time of around 6.0 seconds to go along with a top speed of 127 mph.
Add in the famous looks of any year—not just 2004—and it’s no surprise that this version is highly prized—and all for a price under $30,000 in most cases.
