How many lessons do I need to pass a driving test in an automatic car?

I’m getting ready to get my license. I know that I need to do some coursework, but I’m not sure how much time I need behind the wheel. I only plan to drive a car with an automatic transmission. How many lessons do you need to learn to drive an automatic?

No matter which type of transmission you prefer, your state will likely require at least six one-hour lessons with a certified driving instructor to pass a driving test.
In addition, most states require 30 hours of classroom learning and up to six months of supervised driving with a family member, among other things. For example, in
Illinois
, you need the following to pass a driving test in an automatic car:
  • Six one-hour lessons with a certified driving instructor
  • 30 hours of classroom instruction
  • A final grade of A or B
  • Approval from parents or guardians
  • Passing grade in a behind-the-wheel driving exam
  • *Ask your driving instructor** or contact your local DMV for details specific to your state.
