How many Ford Shelby GT500s were made?

Growing up, my grandfather owned a Ford Shelby GT500—from what I remember it was a pretty solid car, and now that I have some money saved up I’d like to try and buy one, but I’m having a hard time finding any. How many Ford Shelby GT500s were made?

Great question! Between 1967 and 1970, only about 7,000 Ford Shelby GT500s were actually made. Out of those four years, 1968 saw the most production; across all submodels and body styles, there were roughly 2,800 built.
As you might expect, 1970 (the final year of production) saw the least amount of cars built, with only 286 making it off of the assembly line.
All in all, the rough production numbers for each year are as follows:
  • 1967—2,050
  • 1968—2,793
  • 1969—1,871
  • 1970—286
After retiring from racing, Carroll Shelby commissioned the Cobra in the hopes of creating an American-made race car to compete with European makes like Ferrari and Maserati. After the Cobra’s success, Ford contacted Shelby to commission the Shelby GT350 and GT500 to boost the success of the Mustang.
Good luck with your purchase. Hopefully you’re able to find one for sale!
