While there’s no exact number to list how many electric car batteries have been made over the course of history, the amount is likely somewhere in the millions. One of the good things about electric car batteries, though, is that they last decades compared to a regular vehicle’s lead core-based battery. Electric vehicle batteries are also able to be recycled, meaning that less of each battery’s toxic chemicals make their way into drinking water or soil.
Even though other battery types have been experimented with, manufacturers will probably continue to use lithium-ion batteries for the foreseeable future. This has raised concerns from some that we will run out of mineable lithium, but for now, it seems like the Earth’s lithium supply will last us at least until 2050. From there, we’ll have to look for other battery types, some of which may use a gas mixture instead of a solid core.
