How many drunk driving deaths were there in 2013?

I’m a ninth-grade teacher who needs a little help with some research. We’ve got a big school assembly coming up and I’m putting together a presentation on drinking and driving. I’ve got lots of stats for this year, but I need some historical data. I’m hoping you can help me out. How many deaths were there in 2013 due to drinking and driving?

Awesome job on your research—we’re sure your presentation will have a big impact on your students! In 2013, 10,076 drivers were killed in drunk driving crashes, which is one every 52 minutes.
We’re sure you’ve already got your bases covered, but here are a few extra stats that might help with your presentation:
  • According to the NHTSA
, 28 people die each day in drunk driving crashes
  • Eight teens die every day in DUI crashes
  • Young drivers with a BAC over the legal limit are 17 times more likely to die in a crash than sober drivers
Hopefully, these numbers are useful to you—and good luck with your presentation!
