How many drunk driving deaths were there in 2010?

I like to volunteer and I’ve just started working with a driver’s safety program in my neighborhood. We’re doing a campaign against drinking and driving, and I need some data to help with the project. How many people died from drunk driving in 2010?

It’s great that you’re volunteering and making an impact in your community! In 2010, there were 10,228 deaths due to drunk driving, which was 31% of all traffic fatalities that year.
If that stat isn’t scary enough, here are a few more that could help with your campaign:
  • On average, there’s an alcohol-related driving death every 51 minutes
  • Drivers with a BAC of .02 to .05 (which is well below the legal limit) are still seven times more likely to die in a crash than sober drivers
  • The legal consequences of driving under the influence include heavy fines, license suspension, and jail time
  • Eight teens die every day in DUI crashes
Hopefully, these are useful for you!
