How many different makes of electric cars are there?

I’m pretty much only familiar with the most notable EV brands like Tesla, or the electric car versions that carmakers like Ford and GM put out. But does anyone know exactly how many different electric carmakers there are?

In the last year, there were 15 companies manufacturing electric cars in the U.S. That’s quite a wide selection considering that only a decade ago, there were only a handful of manufacturers diving into the electric car market. But in 2021, 21 different vehicles were available, offering customers an electric driving experience that ranged from a compact SUV to a light-duty pickup truck or sedan.
The automakers that are currently selling electric cars in the U.S. include: Audi, BMW, Chevy, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kandi, Kia, Mini Cooper, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Tesla, Vovlo, and Volkswagen.
Rivian will soon be added to the electric car roster within the U.S. as the R1T gears up for production toward the end of 2022. Only a little over 500,000 EVs were sold in the U.S. last year. Yet compared to 2020, EV sales have since perked up 83%, meaning that customers are certainly paying attention to electric cars and are willing to buy one.
Of the carmakers that offer electric cars, Tesla dominates sales, taking nearly 20% of last year’s total electric car sales. Even though Chevy has recently stepped into the ring as a viable EV company, their sales were fairly abysmal in 2020, with their best-seller, the Bolt EV, only reporting 40,000 units sold. EV tech is new and cutting edge, but with only 1% of all U.S. car sales being EVs, it may be some time before we see a switch to electric power on a nationwide scale.
Globally, the number of total sales was 6.2 million, which more than doubled from the amount reported in 2020. Despite American drivers being slow to switch, countries like Germany and China seem to be more willing to experiment with renewable personal transportation. After all, if you’re looking to reduce your CO2 emissions, an EV is the perfect place to start. And if you want to save money on car insurance, the Jerry app is your best bet.
