How many cylinders are in a 4.6 Ford engine?

My coworker told me that their Ford has a 4.6 engine, but I didn’t quite know what they meant when they said that. How many cylinders are in a 4.6 Ford engine?

We’re not surprised you’re confused, that’s kind of an unusual way to refer to that specific engine. There are eight cylinders in a 4.6
Ford
engine.
When it comes to referring to engines, there are two important figures: engine displacement and the number of cylinders. Engine displacement usually comes first in the sequence, and it refers to the volume of space in liters that the engine takes up. So, in the case of the 4.6 Ford engine, you know it occupies 4.6 liters of space under the hood.
The second figure refers to the number of cylinders. And, if it has a “V” in front of it, the engine cylinders are arranged in a “V” formation. It would have been easier to understand if your colleague had been more elaborate and said, “4.6-liter V8 engine.” From the name alone, you’d know how many cylinders the engine has.
Speaking of this engine, it appeared in Ford vehicles from 1990 to 2014. It has been discontinued, and nowadays you’ll only find them under the hoods of Fords on used car lots.
