How many catalytic converters are in a car?

I drive a classic car, but I’m worried about the emissions it might be producing. I’m considering adding a catalytic converter to my vehicle, but I don’t know how to start. How many catalytic converters are in a car anyway?

The easiest way to determine how many catalytic converters are in a car is to look at how many exhaust pipes it has. A vehicle will have a catalytic converter for each exhaust pipe—so while most cars will just need one, dual exhaust vehicles will need two.
Catalytic converters became the norm after 1975, and most dual exhaust vehicles have V8 engines. You might need two catalytic converters if you have a 1975 model or older V8 vehicle.
