How many cars are registered in Massachusetts?

I’m thinking about moving to Massachusetts for work, and one of the deciding factors I’m considering is transportation. I have really bad driving anxiety, and I want to make sure I’ll be able to get around without having an anxiety attack. Does Massachusetts have a lot of cars?

Out of the reported 5,000,000 cars in
Massachusetts
, only 2,003,373 cars are registered, according to the 2020 census. Unfortunately, this still means there could be a lot of vehicles on the road when you drive in the state.
However, the city you live in will also have a big impact on the driving conditions you’ll experience. Large cities tend to have worse traffic, but they also offer more public transportation options, so you’re less likely to need your car while you’re there. By contrast, smaller cities and towns won’t usually have as much traffic, but you’ll need your car to get around.
In either scenario, if you have a car in Massachusetts and plan on using it either occasionally or frequently, you must have at least the
state minimum insurance
.
