After moving to the District of Columbia for a job, I noticed that almost no one has a car. It makes sense after taking public transit, which pretty much can get you anywhere worth going. But I still want to satisfy my curiosity… How many cars are there in the District of Columbia?

The public transportation system in D.C. is one of the best in the country, ranking just below New York City and Chicago. However, this doesn’t stop everyone from having a car.
Per U.S. Census data, there are 357,000 cars in the District of Columbia legally registered to drive. The population density and compact size of the city do seem to deter car ownership, though.
Around 35% of households do not own a car, placing D.C. in the top spot overall. Only
