How many cars are in Massachusetts?

I’ve lived in various places in Massachusetts for the past 15 years. Recently, I noticed that traffic hasn’t been nearly as bad, but I’m not sure why. Maybe the infrastructure has gotten better or fewer people have cars—I’m not sure. How many cars are there in Massachusetts?

If you’ve noticed a slight downturn in traffic, you have an astute sense of observation. Since 2015, the number of registered vehicles in
Massachusetts
has fallen by 0.6%. However, there are still plenty of vehicles on the road.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported that there were 5 million cars in Massachusetts in 2020.
But did you know that according to the
Insurance Information Institute
, about 3.5% of drivers still remain uninsured? All cars, once on the road, must have at least the
state minimum insurance
required in Massachusetts, and if you're caught
driving without car insurance
, you could face steep fines and charges.
