How many cars are in Alabama?

I just moved to Birmingham and I noticed that traffic is a bit rough compared to other areas of the state. Out of curiosity, I want to know how many registered vehicles there are. How many cars are there in Alabama?

Congratulations on your move to Birmingham!
Alabama
has 5.3 million registered cars on its roads, which is the 29th-most in the nation.
The good news is Alabama doesn’t have a single city that ranks in the top 50 for the worst traffic in the country. However, Alabama has experienced a sizable increase in the amount of traffic since 2000. Over the past 20 years, traffic on Alabama roads is up 33%, which is probably why you’ve noticed a bit of congestion since moving to Birmingham.
It's also worth noting that one in five Alabama drivers are uninsured. So, while you may have the
state minimum insurance coverage
on your car, it's also worth looking into insurance add-ons, such as
uninsured motorist
and
comprehensive coverage
.
