How many car payments can you miss?

An unexpected expense came up this month, and I'm afraid it'll set me back on my car payments. How many car payments can I miss before my lender repossesses your car?

Finances are definitely tough right now for a lot of people; you’re definitely not alone. In general, missing three or more payments is grounds for repossession for most auto loan lenders.
A missed payment is defined as a payment that has not been made in over 30 days. Repossession laws vary by state and may make a difference on how many payments you can actually miss, so make sure to check your state’s specific repossession laws!
The best course of action would be to speak with your lender and notify them of your financial situation. Missing more than three payments may result in you defaulting on your auto loan, but communicating with your lender may help you work out a deal.
