The Cadillac
Cien (“cien” is Spanish for “one hundred”) was a concept car built and unveiled in 2002 to celebrate Cadillac’s one-hundredth anniversary—only one was ever built, for reasons we’ll get into later. Designed by British car-designer Simon Cox, the Cadillac Cien was truly a supercar and then some, equipped with a longitudinally-mounted 60-degree 7.2L V12 engine capable of producing an impressive 750 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque.
If you’re thinking that sounds excessive, well, you’re right—the Cien was inspired by the F-22 Raptor, a stealth tactical fighter aircraft, so it’s not as though they were trying to pull their punches when designing it.
Aside from the immense amount of power it could generate, one of the more notable features of the Cadillac Cien was its experimental “displacement on demand” engine technology, which essentially allowed it to run on eight or fewer cylinders when under light load.
Cadillac considered putting the Cadillac Cien into limited production, but ultimately scrapped the idea due to low funding and the high projected selling price of $200,000. The Cien does, however, live on in a few racing video games—namely the Gran Turismo series—and was even featured in the 2014 film Transformers: Age of Extinction.
