Technically, you’re both right! The actual answer is a bit more complicated, and it depends on which model you’re talking about. Here are the production numbers for some of the most notable
BMW M5
models throughout the years:- The first-ever 1988 BMW M5 Touring wagon: 891 units
- The first-generation E34 M5: 12,254 units
- The special edition 2022 M5 CS: around 1,000 units
- The E60 M5 line: 20,589 units
- The M5 Touring E61: around 1,009 units
- The 35th anniversary 35 Jahre M5: 350 units
- The debut F90 “First Edition” M5: 400 units
With the exception of the limited editions, around 20,000 BMW M5 models were made for each generation. As a performance-oriented version of the popular BMW 5-Series, the M5 has been a coveted sports sedan since 1984. Every generation of the M5 is equipped with either a six-cylinder or an eight-cylinder engine. Early models spit out just 256 hp, but the 2023 BMW M5 can reach up to a powerful 617 horsepower—and some special editions like the 2022 M5 CS get up to 627 horsepower.
