How many BMW M3s were made?

My friend claims his BMW M3 is a collectible, but I’m not sure if I believe him (he has a history of embellishing the truth). How many BMW M3s were made?

The
BMW M3
is far from a collectible car, but depending on which M3 model your friend has, it may be somewhat uncommon. For example, if he drives an old M3 E30 made between 1986 and 1991, his car is relatively rare. BMW only produced about 17,970 units of the M3 E30 worldwide.
But most newer versions of the BMW M3 are much more common. Here’s how they stack up:
  • E36 (manufactured between 1992 and 1999): 46,525 units
  • E46 (manufactured between 2000 and 2006): 85,766 units
  • E90/E92/E96 (manufactured between 2007 and 2013): 65,985 units
  • F80 (manufactured between 2014 and 2019): 34,677 units
Official production numbers for current M3 models—the G80 and G81—aren’t available yet, but it’s not likely to be considered a rare car either.
However, one case your friend might have for calling his car a “collectible” is if he owns a special edition of the M3 such as the 2004 M3 CSL, the 2013 M3 Lime Rock Park Edition, or the 2017 M3 30-Jahre Edition. BMW special editions are all produced in limited runs, making them much harder to come by than standard M3s.
