How long will the surcharge stay on my Massachusetts insurance policy?

How long will I have to keep paying for an accident? I was in an accident last year in Boston. Ever since, my insurance policy has been really high. I know the accident was my fault.

Massachusetts
has one of the more complex surcharge policies in the country.
Any accident or ticket will be part of your insurance history and will be underwritten for six years.
If you stay incident free for the first three years, the surcharge will start to decrease and will fall off after the fifth year.
If there is another accident during this time frame, your policy will be surcharged in full for five years.
While most carriers in MA follow this rule, it doesn’t mean your rate will be the same with every insurance company, especially if you carry
an SR-22
. If you are unhappy with your current rate, try
shopping for new car insurance quotes
online.
