When it comes to medical advice, always rely on your doctor’s expertise; they will tell you how long you should wait before driving after hernia surgery. On average, you might be able to start driving about a week after surgery, and you should never drive within 24 hours of having general anesthesia.
Hernias are often located in an area that will be strained by driving, so waiting longer is advised.
If you are prescribed pain medications, this could also affect your ability to drive. Ask your doctor if it would be safe for you to be on the road while taking the medication.
Once you are clear to drive, you may not be able to return to work immediately—depending on the nature of your job. If your job requires strenuous work, you will need to wait until you are fully recovered, which can take four to six weeks.
Since you’ll be taking time off work, you can take this chance to evaluate your current

policy—especially if you haven’t looked into it in a while.
