How long should a car run after getting a jump?

I missed an appointment this morning because my car wouldn't start. I called my friend to come jump my car. My car is running now, but I'm not sure if I can drive it yet. How long does it take to charge your battery after jumpstarting your car?

I’m sorry to hear about your dead battery, but the good news is you can drive it around now that it’s running!
When jumping a car, you should leave your car running for at least 30 minutes after a jumpstart. For more reliable results, drive it around instead of letting it idle. This should fully charge the battery so it won’t die on you again.
If your battery has been dying more than usual, then keep an eye out for symptoms of a weak car battery, like:
  • Engine cranking slowly
  • No lights or dim lights
  • Radio not working
  • Unusually slow windshield wipers
If you notice any of these happening to your car, then your battery probably needs to be replaced.
However, if you didn’t notice any of the accompanying symptoms, then the issue may be more serious and might require more than a jump to fix. Consult a mechanic to find out what’s going on.
If you’re worried about this happening again, look into getting a roadside assistance membership through Jerry. The Jerry app provides industry-leading roadside assistance, including jumpstarts, lockout service, key replacement, and towing, for less than $5 a month.
