How long is your driving permit good for?

I’ve been practicing with my driving permit for a while, but I still don’t feel ready to take my driving test. How long is your driving permit good for?

Good on you for taking your time to make sure you feel prepared for your test! Rules and regulations about driving permits vary by state, so check your local DMV’s license regulations for an exact timeframe.
You can find specific regulations for your driver’s permit in your state’s DMV’s rules of the road or driver’s license procedures. Pay attention to how long you need to have your permit before being able to book a driving test, as well as the rules of its expiration.
Take a look at the following examples of expiration timeframes:
  • California: your driver’s permit is valid for 12 months
  • Illinois: your driver’s permit is valid for 24 months
  • Texas: your driver’s permit is valid until one year after your next birthday
Make sure to book your driving test after your permit has matured—and before it expires. Don’t forget to get a car insurance policy before your road test!
