You’re right, electric cars were first invented in the 1800s, but the more modernized and recognizable versions came out in the mid to late 20th century.
In the 1960s, General Motors started playing around with the idea of a car that runs on batteries. With the ‘70s energy crisis, and the subsequent spike in oil prices the concept of the electric car became much more appealing. In the ‘90s, GM released a fleet of EVs, that mysteriously disappeared despite public interest.
Electric cars were always looked down upon for their bulky batteries and short driving range, but with the introduction of Tesla Motors in 2004, the EV industry began to focus not only on innovation in function but on fashion and design as well.
