How long does it take to process new car registration?

I want to get a new Infiniti sedan in the next month but I've never registered my own vehicle. How long does it take to register a car?

Vehicle registration
is immediate at the DMV. If you're buying from a dealer, it typically takes about 4 weeks to receive your official registration sticker in the mail—but you'll get a temporary one in the meantime.
  • If you're buying from a dealer: The dealership will complete the vehicle registration process for you. You'll receive a temporary registration tag valid until you receive your permanent plates and stickers in the mail.
  • If you buying from a private seller: You'll need to go to the DMV and apply to register your vehicle. But don't drive the unregistered car there! Bring your vehicle title,
    proof of insurance
, and any other documents required by your state (like your emissions testing certificate). The DMV will verify your VIN and issue your registration on the spot.
Before you pick up your new vehicle, make sure you have a
car insurance policy
in place. It's illegal to drive without insurance coverage and the dealer won't let you off the lot without proof.
