How long does engine oil usually last?

I just bought my first car—it’s used but in good condition—and my dad helped me check and change the oil, so I know how to do that, but I don’t know how frequently I need to do it. How long does engine oil usually last?

Great question! In general, your engine’s oil should last somewhere between 5,000 and 7,500 miles before it needs to be changed—this largely depends, however, on the type of oil you use, its function, and your driving habits.
Thanks to modern lubricant technology, motor oil lasts longer than it once did—traditional and synthetic blend oils typically last between 5,000 and 7,500 miles, while full synthetic oils can last closer to 15,000 miles before they need to be changed.
That said, you may get less life out of your oil if your driving habits subject the engine to “severe service”—that is, you make frequent short trips, regularly carry heavy loads, live in a very dusty or extreme temperature environment, or often drive in stop-and-go traffic.
Check your engine oil frequently to avoid damaging your engine—newer vehicles will even automatically alert you via the oil change indicator light if your oil needs to be changed.
Hope this helps!
Regularly checking and changing your oil is integral to keeping your engine running smoothly—make sure your vehicle is protected by the right insurance policy using
