How long does a state car inspection take?

How long does a state car inspection take? I just moved to a new state, and I'm getting my first state inspection. I’d like to schedule a doctor's appointment on the same day, but they can’t overlap.

Getting a state car inspection
will usually take between 20 and 90 minutes, depending on where you live. Here are some of the factors that determine how long your inspection takes:
  • Your state. Each state has different regulations, so inspections will vary from one to the next.
  • Smog checks. Some states like California will include a smog check as part of your inspection. These can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
  • The shop you choose. Some auto shops might zoom through the checklist, others might keep you waiting—the timing is really on them!
Remember, if you fail your smog check or emissions test, you’ll need to come back for another appointment. But you can easily pass by calling your local DMV and asking about the requirements. While you’re asking about smog checks, ask about the
