How long does a spare tire last?

I had a close call the other day avoiding some debris that was in the middle of the road, which got me thinking: if I got a flat tire, I don’t know how long spare tires work? How long does a spare tire last?

Glad to hear you were able to avoid that situation! A typical unused spare tire is designed to last somewhere between 7 and 10 years.
It’s important to note, though, that in the event you do need to use a spare tire, they’re not intended to be a long-term replacement for a normal tire. Driving more than 50 to 70 miles on a spare tire and faster than 50 miles per hour should be avoided.
Driving too long or too fast on a spare tire can cause damage to other parts of your vehicle and its difference in size and tread compared to your other three tires makes you more vulnerable to road hazards.
