How long does a moving violation affect insurance?

I recently got a moving violation and I’m expecting my insurance to go up. I’m okay with this as long as it’s only for a year or two. For how long will a moving violation affect my insurance?

That’s too bad about your moving violation! Moving violations usually affect insurance for three to five years. You should expect to pay a higher rate and premium during that time.
While it varies per state and insurance company, even minor moving violations can spike an insurance rate. Although some minor violations are often forgiven by a provider.
Moving violations include the following offenses and you want to make sure you avoid committing any of them.
  • Following too closely
  • Not yielding to the right of way
  • Speeding
  • Reckless driving
  • Improper turns
  • Crossing a railroad grade
  • Not obeying a traffic control device
To maintain a low rate, you need to maintain a perfect driving record. It takes time, patience, and careful driving—all of which every driver is capable of.
Some other tips to get a low rate include:
  • Comparison shopping
  • Accepting a higher deductible
  • Buying an older car
  • Getting your home and car insurance from the same company
  • Having a strong credit score and record
  • Looking into discounts, including low mileage discounts if you don’t drive a lot
