How long does a DUI stay on your driving record in GA?
I got pulled over after one too many beers recently, and I’m worried my driving record will haunt me forever. How long will a DUI stay on my record in Georgia?

Being pulled over for a
DUI
is serious, and the consequences can be steep. Unlike some states where a DUI stays on your record for five years, a Georgia DUI
stays on your driving record for life.However, Georgia has what’s called a “look-back” period. The look-back period is 10 years, and if you receive two or more DUIs within the ten years, you may be subject to additional penalties upon conviction, such as \increased fines, extended jail time, longer license suspension, and more.
For your first offense, here are the penalties you can face:
- Minimum 24 hours of jail time up to 12 months
- Fine between $300 and $1,000
- Up to 12-month license suspension
- Minimum 40 hours of community service
- $210 license reinstatement fee
The penalties are steeper if you’re charged with another DUI within five years. A second offense carries the following penalties:
- Minimum 48 hours in jail, possibly 90 days to one year
- Fine between $600 and $1,000
- Three-year license suspension
- Minimum 30 days of community service
- $210 set license reinstatement fee
- A mandatory clinical evaluation and possible completion of a substance abuse treatment program at the offender’s expense
On top of that, you’ll also see your
car insurance
rates increase. A DUI on your driving record classifies you as a high-risk driver
, and many insurers may pass on insuring you. If they do, however, you’ll be subject to substantially higher rates and may even need a Georgia SR-22
