How long do I have to change car insurance after moving?

I’m moving to New York at the end of August and need to update my auto insurance. The problem is, I’m also starting a new job and will probably be really busy. How long do I have after I move to update my car insurance policy?

Congrats on your move to the Big Apple—or, uh, the Big Orchard. To avoid complications, you should update your car insurance company or switch providers within 30 days of moving to a new state.
If you don’t update your insurance in time:
  • Your insurance provider could refuse to insure you. Most auto insurance companies prefer you update your address within 30-90 days of moving. Failing to do so could make you liable for any damages after a car accident and subject to the penalties of
    driving without car insurance
    .
  • You could be fined. According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, you must register your vehicle within 30 days of becoming a resident. Most states have similar penalties for driving without proper
    vehicle registration
    .
  • You won’t be able to register your vehicle. If you want to register your vehicle in New York, you’ll need a valid auto insurance policy.
For all these reasons, it’s best to get your car insurance sorted out as soon as possible. Check if your insurance company provides coverage in New York or switch to one that does.
