How long do I have to cancel car insurance?

I’m looking to cancel my current insurance policy to move to another company but don’t want to pay double for a month. How do I cancel my current car insurance to avoid this?

Different insurance companies have different cancellation policies, so you’ll need to either call your old insurance agent or go through your new insurance company. Some carriers will let you cancel your insurance immediately, while others require at least 30 days notice.
Generally speaking, you’ll want to wait at least a day or two after you’ve purchased the new policy before you officially request a cancellation of your old policy. This way, you’ll avoid having a
lapse in coverage
.
To cancel your old insurance policy, you might have to:
  • Send a signed cancellation letter to your former provider
  • Pay a cancellation fee to your former provider
Some insurance companies can even cancel your former policy on your behalf when you switch. To do this, they will probably need details like:
  • Your policy number
  • Your policy’s effective dates
  • A signed cancellation letter
