How long can you keep your former spouse on your car insurance?

I'm getting divorced, but we're on good terms. We decided to stay on the same car insurance policy for the time being. Is there a time limit for how long we can be on the same policy?

“While there isn’t a time limit for how long your former spouse can be on your
car insurance
, there are certain reasons why you couldn’t be on a policy together.
One issue is that your former spouse is likely a second-named insured. This is normal for married couples, but typically less common for other types of relationships. You’ll need to confirm with your insurance company that your former spouse can be a named insured. If not, your insurance company may require a re-rating of your policy, which means your rate could change.
Another thing car insurance companies will look at is your address. If your former spouse no longer lives with you, most companies won’t allow them to be on a policy with you. You would each have to get separate policies for your vehicles at the addresses where you reside.
If you’re unsure of your insurance company’s guidelines, you can reach out to them directly. An agent will be to explain any rules regarding former spouses. Should you need to find another insurance carrier, be sure to request
car insurance quotes
from several different carriers.
