How long can the car insurance company take to fix my car?

I've been waiting over two weeks for the car insurance company to fix my car at one of their preferred repair shops. I need my car to get to work, so I've been using rideshare services, but I feel like this shouldn't be taking this long. How long can my provider take to repair the car? Is there a limit?

How long your
car insurance
company takes to fix your car depends on:
  • The severity of the damage
  • How busy the repair shop is
  • Whether or not they have the parts for your car in their inventory
While most
car repairs
take one to two weeks, back-ordered parts could create a bottleneck that can take a month or more to fix your car.
When you
file a car insurance claim
,  your provider is required to investigate. A claims adjuster will review the damage and the accident details—typically, you’ll be required to get an estimate of the damage from a repair shop.
If your claim is approved, your insurance company will coordinate payment with the repair shop. The repair shop will schedule the work and provide an estimated date of completion.
Keep in mind: if another vehicle and/or insurance company is involved, this process may take longer. Here are estimated times for repairs once your claim is approved:
  • One day: windshield replacement and bumper repairs
  • One to two days: minor auto body work
  • One to two weeks: internal replacement of elements of your car
  • Over a month: extensive damage to multiple parts
If your mechanic is taking an unreasonable amount of time to fix your car, contact your insurance company and the mechanic to resolve any issues that may be delaying the repairs.
