How long can a baby travel in a car seat?

My husband and I are taking our five-month-old daughter to visit my grandparents in Wyoming. We’re excited to introduce her to her great-grandparents, but are a bit worried about the long trip. We’ll be driving to Wyoming from Florida. How long can she stay in her car seat each day?

Congratulations on your new addition to the family! Your question is an important one because infants can have breathing difficulties if they’re sitting up for long periods of time.
Healthcare professionals recommend that babies not be kept in a car seat for longer than two hours at a stretch. In addition, either you or your husband should sit in the back seat with your daughter to keep an eye on her.
As you travel, plan to stop every two hours. Luckily, interstate rest areas have come a long way in recent years. Many have first-rate amenities, from picnic areas to playgrounds.
Be sure to take your baby out of her car seat and let her lie flat on a blanket or help her walk around. The idea is to make sure she is breathing well, and her circulation is good.
