How is the frontal lobe active while driving a car?

It’s amazing what our brain can do when we’re driving! The frontal lobe activates to analyze the best response to a potentially dangerous situation while driving a car. The frontal lobe is also responsible for controlling executive functions that are crucial to driving safely:

- Set-shifting: the ability to shift your driving behavior according to the situation
A study by Dr. Gian Beeli found that the frontal lobe doesn’t mature fully until a person is 20 years old. This could explain the number of serious teen driver accidents due to critical errors including:
- Not scanning roads for potential hazards
- Getting distracted and focusing on the wrong thing
- Driving too fast for the road conditions (e.g. icy roads)
