How is a 30 MPH limit indicated without signs?

I got pulled over for going over 30 MPH in a residential zone, but there were no speed limit signs to show me that I should be going that speed. The officer who pulled me over said I should have known anyway. What indicates a 30 MPH speed limit if there are no signs?

! A 30 MPH speed limit can actually be indicated by streetlights. Unless a sign indicates another speed limit, you should assume that the speed limit is 30 MPH in any residential street where streetlights line the road.
It’s generally a good idea to drive 30 MPH or slower on any residential street, however, since you’re likely to encounter a pedestrian. Additionally, residential streets are often narrow, meaning you need to be more careful if you encounter another vehicle.
