How fast is Kia Soul EV battery degradation?

I’m thinking about buying a Kia Soul EV, but I don’t know what to expect as far as how often I’d need to change the battery. How fast does Kia Soul EV battery degradation happen?

Kia EVs generally come with a battery capacity warranty of three to ten years or 100,000 miles. With that in mind, it’s reasonable to expect the battery to last about that long, but you’ll see at least some
Kia Soul
EV battery degradation over time.
That said, the Kia Soul EV isn’t currently on the lineup of Kia’s new vehicles in the United States, so if this is where you’re car shopping, you might want to look into the
Kia Niro
EV instead.
As they age, the typical EV battery could be expected to degrade at a rate of about 2% per year and have a lifespan of somewhere between eight and ten years, if not longer. However, it ultimately depends on the battery and how it’s been treated over time.
To slow down your Kia Soul EV’s battery degradation (or the Niro’s) and expand its lifespan, here are some tips to keep in mind:
  • Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures whenever possible.
  • Kia and other vehicle manufacturers commonly recommend against making frequent use of DC fast charging, stating that the excess heat and energy can lead to battery capacity degradation.
  • Keep your battery charged between 20% and 80% when possible—continuous driving on low batteries or full charges to 100% can both be hard on a lithium-ion battery and reduce its lifespan.
  • Smooth, gradual acceleration saves on gas—and it’s better for EV batteries, too.
