How far can the average electric car go?
I’m shopping for a new car, and I’m very interested in driving an electric vehicle. I don’t want to spend too much money, so I won’t be buying the best one on the market. There seems to be a lot of caution around ‘range’ when it comes to EVs, so I wonder if I can even buy a car with a good enough range that’s still affordable. Can you help me make sense of this—how far can the average electric car go?

Depending on where you live, you may not have the best charging infrastructure, so the fear of running out of electricity and getting stranded is somewhat rational. Electric car manufacturers have been working hard to solve this problem and have done so for the most part.
The average electric car travels between 200 and 400 miles on a single charge. That distance has grown from 100 miles, which was the average range from 2011 to 2016, and it’s a lot more than you think. This is enough to support the average American’s daily commute without having to refill.
While automakers are working with the government to build supporting infrastructure, they also promise longer range in the future. As you shop for your new car, you should ensure that you have the best car insurance coverage available to you.
