tuning works by increasing your car’s torque and horsepower by either mechanically installing performance-enhancing upgrades or by electronically remapping the engine’s characteristics.Of course, that’s a very abbreviated explanation and doesn’t cover everything, but it gives us a place to begin. To understand tuning better, let’s look at a few examples.
Let’s say you install a cold air intake in your Volvo XC70—in doing so, you are mechanically enhancing engine performance and airflow, allowing for an observable boost in horsepower and fuel economy.
With electronic tuning, however, the engine control unit’s (ECU) stock characteristics can be reprogrammed without ever having to physically alter your Volvo XC70. A handheld tuner can be used to access the ECU and electronically change parameters relating to things such as fuel pressure and valve timing to increase engine performance.
