How does the self-driving Tesla work?
With gas prices skyrocketing, I’m thinking about buying an electric car. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Tesla and am curious about the self-driving feature. How does it work?

are great cars and the self-driving feature is really unique! Autopilot is an advanced driver assistance system that improves safety and convenience for drivers by reducing the overall workload associated with driving. Every Tesla is equipped with 8 external cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a high-power onboard computer that provides an extra layer of safety when you’re behind the wheel.
In simple terms, Autopilot on all new Tesla vehicles uses a mix of cameras and ultrasonic sensors to sense and see the surrounding environment and provide drivers with complete awareness about their surroundings. Here’s are some of the features:
- Navigate: Helps you navigate your way through the roads, interchanges, and exits
- Auto lane change: Helps you move lanes on the highway when Autosteer is activated
- Autopark: Have trouble parallel or perpendicular parking? This feature will do it with one touch
- Summon: Get in and out of tight spaces
- Smart Summon: Navigate more complex spaces and dodge objects you may come across on the road or in parking lots
- Traffic and stop sign control: Identifies traffic lights and stops signs to reduce your cars speed as your approach
Keep in mind that turning auto-pilot on doesn’t mean you can sleep at the wheel. It’s intended to be used with a fully attentive driver who is prepared to take control at a moment’s notice. Even when fully activated, the car is not 100% autonomous.
