How does homeowners insurance work if you have an HOA?

I have a condo that's also part of an HOA. How does homeowners insurance work if I already have an HOA policy that covers the exterior of the building?

“You’ll still need to get condo insurance or a Unit-Owners HO-6 policy to protect your condo and personal property. The HOA policy will continue to cover the exterior of the building as you’re technically paying for it through your HOA fees.
Your HO-6 policy will cover the 16 named perils along with your personal property anywhere in the world. Some of the perils covered are:
  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • Windstorm
  • Hail
To get the best rate for a homeowners policy, you might want to bundle it with your
car insurance
if possible.
