How does Google Maps calculate driving time?

Sometimes I wonder if I can trust the driving time on Google Maps. Does it take things like construction and road conditions into account? How does Google Maps calculate the time it takes to drive places?

You’re right to question how Google Maps calculates driving time! Google Maps takes average speed limits and daily traffic data into account. However, it does not factor in weather, accidents, or your own driving speed into its initial time estimate.
If you have GPS turned on in the app, the time estimate may change to match the conditions as you drive. But in general, Google Maps time estimates are optimistic—giving you the time it takes to get from point A to point B under optimal conditions for the time of day.
So, it’s a good idea to add a buffer of 25% to allow for unexpected traffic or weather conditions. For example, if Google Maps tells you your trip will take an hour, leave 15 minutes early to give yourself a buffer. If your trip ends up going smoothly, arriving early is usually better than arriving late!
Another way to enjoy a smooth trip is to make sure you have sufficient insurance coverage to protect you on the road.
