What does toll-by-plate mean in Florida?

I just moved to Florida about a week ago and I noticed on my way to work that Florida has a ton of toll signs that say toll-by-plate. I’m not familiar with this term, and I don’t want to get a ticket for lack of payment. What does toll-by-plate mean in the Sunshine State?

Toll-by-plate is a type of payment for a toll road that’s available to people who don’t have a toll pass, or when the road doesn’t have a manned toll booth.
Here’s how it works:
  • Drive through the toll area
  • Camera takes a picture of your plate
  • The state sends a bill to the registered address of the car.
Florida
has
734 miles of toll roads
—more than any other state in the country. As a result, many Floridians and tourists choose to use toll roads to quickly move from one place to the next.
If you’re constantly using toll roads, think about buying a toll pass—SunPass or EZ-Pass—to make transit far easier and less time-consuming.
And if you just moved to Florida, make sure to
register your car in Florida
and adjust your coverage to
Florida’s minimum insurance requirements
