How does a trailer brake controller work?

I’m helping a friend move, so we rented a trailer that could hook up to my truck. However, the trailer came with a brake controller and I have no idea how to use it. How does a trailer brake controller work?

A trailer brake controller works by using the electricity from the towing vehicle (your truck, in this case) to help regulate the trailer’s brakes. They’re easy enough to install and use. Just follow these steps:
  • Park your truck and trailer on a level surface
  • Plug in the trailer wiring harness
  • Give the brake controller a few minutes to calibrate
  • Set the maximum brake output depending on the size of the load
  • Adjust the sensitivity level
